Skin of a Sinner by Avina St. Graves

DNF @ 64% 1.8/5 don’t get me wrong I knew I wouldn’t actually like this for the plot I was just in the mood for a raunchy dark romance where the MMC is scarily obsessive over the girl. And this was great for the flashbacks but once it got to the real time part it was so bad. Like it seems like he hates her and isn’t soft for her anymore cuz he’s so aggressive. Don’t get me wrong I love his dedication and all but like she doesn’t even seem comfortable anymore and all they do is fight and fuck no more soft moments and she’s already kidnapped again like damn let them breathe. Giving it some points for the moments I liked but I wanna read a real book now.

Spoiler summary:
Roman is an angered foster child (8 years old) who keeps moving schools cuz he acts out. At one school he meets a girl two years younger (6 years) and she offers him half of her shitty made sandwich. She then nicknamed him Mickey since that is her favorite character since the stuffed animal is all she has left from her mom. After he realizes she is a foster child too he becomes obsessed with her, braids her hair, and wants to protect her so he acts right so he can stay at that school. They grow up together as a pair and on her 17th bday (he’s 19) he kisses her and says he can’t wait for her to finally be his when she’s 18. He then goes to beat up her two bullies but it goes wrong and he ends up disappearing for three years so she thought her left her. 3 years go by and she wakes up to him killing her shitty foster family and kidnapping her so they can finally be with each other. She hates him for leaving her and calls him Roman instead of “Mickey” and we find out he was in prison the 3 years so it was against his will to be apart from her. They fuck in the woods and I left it at two people trying to kidnap her so he kills them.

Noteable moments:

As he’s in the middle of murdering her entire shitty family: “I’m sorry, Princess. I didn’t mean to wake you.”

(When he was 8, she’s 6). He saw her get bullied, and she sat near him during lunch and shared her bread and butter sandwich since he didn’t have lunch. He’s snappy with her but beats up her bullies the next day and steals their lunch and gives it to her, but she splits her bad lunch and the food lunch so they can both have a half

(Past)“I thought you shouldn’t share food.”
“Shut up. You don’t count.”

(Past) She can’t pronounce “Roman” cuz she can’t say her R’s well yet: “It doesn’t matter.” I try to save her from feeling bad. “I don’t like the name anyway.”

(Past) “You can be Mickey, and I can be Minnie”

(Past)“I’ll call you Bella.” Because she’s the only person I’ve ever met who deserves to be called pretty. Even with her messed up hair and inside-out ripped t-shirt. “But—"I stop her before she tries to protest. “I like Bella.”

(Past) He wanted to be so bad he gets kicked out of this school too but meeting her made him rethink that and try to stay

(He’s 14, she’s 12) She cleans up his cuts from fighting: “Yes, I saw the other guy.” She throws her hands up, but the exasperation doesn’t reach her eyes. “You pushed him to his knees and made him beg me for my forgiveness.”

(Past) He redoes her hair for her before school everyday so it doesn’t look crazy

(Past) He brings an extra inhaler in his backpack for her and scolds her for forgetting hers

(Past)“ I hate when she goes, because she’s all alone with no one to watch over her. What if Mitchell, her new foster dad, tries to hit her? He hasn’t done it before, but it doesn’t mean he won’t start. Or, what if she has a nightmare, can’t find Mickey Mouse, or has a panic attack again? Or if she forgets her inhaler?”

(Past) “when she hugged me for the very first time two years ago on my birthday, it was like I saw the light. Then, when she hugged me last year, I’m pretty sure I understood why people find religion.”

He got silk ropes to tie her up so that it wouldn’t hurt her wrist as he low-key kidnaps her

“Don’t worry. If you break, I’ll put you back together. If you run, I’m running right behind you. If you burn, I’ll burn with you.”

They would play the same exact songs or podcasts at the same time growing up so that I could feel like they were right next to each other while they slept in different homes

(He’s 15, she’s 13): “You will never be alone again. I swear on my life. Wherever you go, I’ll be right there. We’ll always find each other. I’m not going anywhere. It’s a promise. We’re forever, Princess, and nothing will ever come between us. Do you understand?” She sniffles. “Yes.”“Say it.”“We’re forever.”“Swear it.”“I promise I’ll never leave you again.”

(Past) He gets her a book she wanted but only if she reads it to him since he loves her voice

(Past) He’s talking about her Mickey Mouse obsession after he got her a locket with Mickey in it since that’s his nickname and it reminds her of her birth mother: “Our kids will probably be just as obsessed with the rodent.”

(Past) He has walked her to and from schools for years, even after he graduated.

(Past) he still fixes her hair before she goes to school

(Past) she lost the earrings her mom gave her before she passed so he got another pair made

(Past) after then first kiss: “I’m going to see you every day, and it’s going to kill me not to pounce on you. On that note, no skirts, no shorts, no low-cut shirts, and—I never thought I’d agree with the teachers—no shoulders. For God’s sake, you better put away the shoulders. They’re too tempting. ”

(Past) “If I could live in her skin, I would. I don’t think she gets that.”

(Past) he just got shot and doesn’t want to die purely because someone needs to take care of Bella: “. I’m going to die. No.No.Bella.Who’s going to watch over Bella?Who’s going to take care of my princess?I can’t die. I need to take her to school. I have to make sure she’s okay. I have to be there for her. What if she forgets to bring her inhaler again? What if she doesn’t have enough money for lunch, or has a nightmare? No. I can’t leave Bella”

“ I’m meant to be putting three kids in her, and we’re supposed to have an unconventional wedding, where she’d wear a white dress and start crying as she walks down the aisle. I can’t die. I won’t.”

He drew a portrait of her in prison, so that he got to see her every day, and wouldn’t forget what she looked like

“My religion starts with “Isa” and ends with “Bella,” and I’d worship at her altar every night”

Right as he gets out of jail he breaks into her room and watches her sleep

(Past) he calls her job for months and doesn’t say anything just to hear her voice when she picks up

He packed her bags and is somehow laying in bed with her and cuddling her as she sleeps without waking her up.

“We’re just—" The ax comes down, splitting the trunk in two, then his searing eyes snap up to mine. “Call us friends. I dare you.”

He got “Bella” tattooed over his heart in prison

Hi arm tattoo: “tattoo of a drawing she made me when she was seven. The first drawing she ever gave me.”

Another tattoo: “ she ends on my inner bicep, where I have a mouse wearing a tiara, her signature on any street art we’d do together.”

“ Everything she’s ever liked is marked on my skin for the rest of my life: her favorite animals, the trips we’ve done, things that matter to her.”
