Turtles All the Way Down by John Green
5.0
I pre-ordered this book when john green announced it and got a signed copy which I am so happy about as a massive fan of him and his writing. However I didn’t start reading it until today. Why? I get thought spirals too and was worried it would trigger some. I decided to pick it up on a whim and sped through it in a day.
It is, I think, John’s best novel and I cannot wait to re read it. I can relate to Aza even though I don’t share any of her fears, maybe because I, too, have thought spirals, or maybe simply by how beautifully she was written. All the characters felt so real, unlike other YA characters who seem too perfect even with their imperfections.
This book perfectly illustrated the relationships with people suffering from Mental illness from both sides, as well as young teen love. It goes without saying that the thought spirals and metaphors for mental illness were absolutely spot on. John has yet again written a book I will cherish for many years to come.
Although I did love this book, I’m glad I waited to read it until I was better at coping with intrusive thoughts / had less of them - so would not recommend to anyone who is spiralling. Other than that I think everyone could do with reading, especially if they know someone with a mental illness as it could really help them understand what goes on inside their heads - if not, it’s a brilliantly enjoyable read!
