Hard to Come by by Laura Kaye

4.0

I had pretty mediocre feelings about Ride Hard by Laura Kaye. It was the first Kaye book I read, and while I couldn’t put it down, I didn’t love it, either. So I wasn’t really sure if her previous series, Hard Ink, would be for me. But my library has the audiobooks available, and I decided to give it a try. And holy cow am I glad I did because I so loved these books.

Naturally, because I apparently cannot read a series in order, the first Hard Ink book I read was the third in the series, Hard to Come By. I was able to figure out what was going on pretty easily, however I think it might have been better if I had read this series in order.

The whole series revolves around some former soldiers who were framed for some bad stuff while they were deployed. Years later, back in the states, they are trying to clear their names. Derek and the team are trying to find information on a certain baddy, and they discover that this baddie has a sister - Emilie. In an effort to learn more, Derek finds a way to meet Emilie, and wouldn’t you know they are attracted to each other. Of course, Emilie doesn’t realize what Derek is up to.

Derek is the hero of Hard to Come By, and boy did I absolutely adore him. He’s full of energy, and he’s not one to throw a pity party for himself, even though he has a reason to do so. He lost a leg, and now wears a prosthetic, but he really goes with it. Derek does has some insecurities, of course, but they made me love him all the more. He really is a nice guy, which made it so very easy for me to forgive him for misleading Emilie.

Emilie was pretty easy to adore, as well. She’s a really nice person, and works at a college as a counselor.  She’s really struggling with how her brother is acting these days, and he’s starting to actually frighten her. I also loved that when she learned about what her brother was doing, she didn’t try to protect him. I mean, of course she doesn’t want him hurt, but she wasn’t stupid about it either. And I loved how she was with Derek.

Seriously, Emilie and Derek were just so perfect together. In romantic suspense novels, the hero and heroine do tend to fall for each other pretty quickly, but you know, I so didn’t mind it here. I pretty much wanted them married with 2.5 babies and a white picket fence after their first meeting. That's how much I loved them together. And whoa there are some sexy times between these two, and it was awesome.

Hard to Come By is very fast paced, and there is so much action. Lots of guns, and weapons and all that. I’m not always into romantic suspense, but let me tell you, I was feeling this one. I really can’t recommend this book enough. If you're looking for a novel that sucks you in immediately, has a fabulous couple with chemistry that jumps off the page, and with non-stop action, Hard to Come By by Laura Kaye is for you. This review was originally posted on Quinn's Book Nook
