From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout

once again all it takes to get me out of a reading slump is some sleazy fantasy.... oops. overall I really enjoyed this book, the characters, and the potential for the magic/power system to go. very fast paced and finished this over the span of a day...lol. very angsty but not the best in terms of partners with red flags hehe

spoilery thoughts:
poppy, the maiden, is supposed to ascend as the chosen one of her kingdom but craven attacks start killing people in the castle. she ventures out one night to a (basically sex dungeon) hahaha and meets Hawke, a royal guard who seduces her. later, a lady in waiting and one of her personal guards are killed by (what we think) are descenders, those who oppose the ascended and their rule. there is a craven attack on the rise, the barrier that separates the kingdom from the descenders and atlantians. she is beat by the duke and the lord for disobeying (talking to other women, socializing) etc as her gifts of sensing peoples emotions gets stronger and expands. at the rite, poppy's first attendance, she and Hawke sneak away to the jacaranda tree and ~smooch~. then vikter and Hawke get into an argument, and the next thing we know the duke is dead (killed by Hawke with the cane he used to beat poppy). the descenters attack once again and victor ends up dead. poppy also hacks lord mazes head off (iconic). the duchess seeks no punishment, but they need to head to the capital per request of the queen and king. on their way there, poppy and Hawke sleep together and read from the dirty diary lmao. once things start to seem fishy to one of the royal guards, its revealed that some of the "guards" are actually wolven and were the ones who killed rylan, her former guard. at one of the previous ceremonies a couple pleads for the life of their son, and that father shows up to be a wolven too. Hawke is revealed to be Atlantian and have the two fangs poppy read about earlier. Hawke reveals that they are trading poppy for this brother, the king of Atlantia and that the ascended created the craven by killing and sucking the blood from children/mortals. the former king males created the vampry by ascending (almost immortal and cant walk in the sun). the vampry were bloothirsty and were draining mortals to ascend. (brings up the point that atlantians have also killed, where is the line drawn?). Hawke is revealed to be the dark one, or cas, and then poppy STABS him, but not where he will die. and then randomly he and poppy have sex again even though her whole world was just shattered??? they drink from eachother, but not enough to turn (or culling). Hawke has a brand on from of the royal crest from when they drank his blood and tortured him a long time ago. the book ends with the traitors/decendents traveling with them plastered, dead on the walls and Hawke/Casteel planning to bring poppy to Atlantia to marry her (princess, also she is probably half Atlantian because of her powers)
