Genuinely one of the best books I have read in a long long time. I adore fairy tales and I especially love reading their re-tellings. Terry Pratchett has written a book I will be rereading over and over again and again. It has everything I love best in a book explicitly intended as a rewrite of those worn stories we've passed down for hundreds of years. A deeply pragmatic protagonist who understands the world she lives in, stories which are real and have always been, even if we don't recognize them, and a perspective on life and existence that is deeply comforting, even if you must first be entirely divorced from everything you hold dear to find that comfort. I haven't read a book that more perfectly hit the nail on the head since I first picked up Beauty by Robin McKinley or reread Dealing With Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede. Prachett writes "The Wee Free Men" like he's walking a path long trod before him, but still finding new things to enjoy along that journey. Seriously. Go read it.
