This was an easy, enjoyable read. Even though I 'only' gave it 3 stars in the end, it's the kind of 3-star book that I really enjoy, and have fun critiquing. On the plus side, it's an interesting world with an intriguing (albeit so far seemingly very soft, while I prefer hard) magic system, likeable characters, a different way of introducing a 'magic school' setting, etc. On the down side, the execution of the storytelling comes off a bit dry, I wanted more description of people and place, and a more visceral, emotional connection to the POV characters than I got. There wasn't quite as much depth and development to the setting and characters as it could have had.

However, it ends with an interesting and exciting set-up for book 2 and I'm really looking forward to continuing with the trilogy.
