I first read Ready Player One is 2016 and rated it 4 stars. I loved Wil Wheaton as the narrator then and still enjoyed his narration this time. But during my reread this year (2021) my issues with the book the first time we’re holding me up even more. Many of the references were info dumped and the diversity seemed superficial. The gamer tropes had undercurrents of fat phobia, transphobia, and a general diminishing of women. The concept was really interesting and presented fun. Plus the book was so much better than the movie.
