Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance

A journey

The author here tells quite a journey of his life in this book. I grew up in very different circumstances than he did and I was happy to read of the progress he made from where he came. He certainly was not expected to progress to the level that he eventually achieved. Kudos to him for overcoming the difficult circumstances into which he was born and he did a great job of putting his story into print. I know that the author said he a politically conservative, people who know me might think that this would be an issue for me as I'm a liberal. However I never had the impression that the author was trying to push his viewpoints on the reader. On the other hand, he was simply telling his life from viewpoint with which he grew up. Certainly my rating would not be so high if he was trying to push his viewpoints on the reader. Perhaps if I had grown up as he did I'd be a conservative as well.
