Recommended for: fans of Every Summer After, first love x second chance romance
Emotional Investment: My heart hurts. I SOBBED. This opened old wounds (in kind of the worst way). Even though I guessed the reasons they had been apart for 11 years, I still wasn't prepared for how it would hurt me.
Book Hangover: i'm not well
How did I learn about this book?: Tiktok
Audiobook Comment: Spectacular, the narrator's male voice was not cringey at all. It was really attractive LOL
Memorable Imagery: "Favorite word?" "You're my best everything."

Ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch, owww. I stayed up until almost 4 in the morning to binge-read this book. Love and Other Words had me in a chokehold from start to finish, like every other book by Christina Lauren. Set in alternating timelines between present (San Francisco / Berkeley) and past (Healdsburg), watching our MCs grow into themselves and fall in love as semi long-distance high schoolers. I was already screaming 16% of the way in, falling in love with MMC Elliot Petropoulus for how direct he was and his love for books. I fell in love with FMC Macy and only wanted the best for her. I felt her jealousy and her anger and her grief. During this ride, I came up with hypotheses for why they stayed out of contact for 11 years and though my hypotheses were right, I was not ready for the exact details. It felt like I was sucker punched and put through a time travel machine to relive my own past traumas. The remarkable chemistry I had felt for the two characters gone in a matter of pages. My stomach's still twisting. If being with Elliot forever makes Macy happy, then good for her, but personally, I wasn't when I was in that position.

This book was well-written, so although the climax was devastating and traumatizing, I don't think it's worth dropping the overall book to below 4 stars.
WHY ELLIOT WHY?! SPOILERS AHEAD:WHAT DO YOU MEAN WHO ELSE ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO KISS? THE ANSWER IS NO ONE! AND THEN WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU THOUGHT IT WAS HER??? YOU DECLARE YOUR LOVE FOR HER AND YOU PROPOSE AND THEN YOU DO THAT?! AND THEN BECAUSE OF WHAT YOU DID, HER DAD DIES!
