This Arthurian Legend retelling is spectacularly done. It quickly tears down and preconceptions you may have and wraps you up in a wonderfully unique magic system. While introducing you to a hidden world of ancient political turmoil, magical challenges, and horrific threats, it also gracefully addresses the current and historical racial disparities in the southern U.S.

The main character is strong, independent, willful, and witty, while also being a convincing and flawed teenager. Her growth throughout this story is incredible and well deserved as she is exposed to her families heartbreaking history. Similarly, the growth of the supporting characters, for better or for worse, is easily as satisfying.

At the start, I felt that this story reminded me heavily of The Mortal Instruments series, particularly City of Bones, but it quickly set itself apart as its own unique and spectacular story (with no incest).
