It's a hella long time between books and I forget a lot of stuff.

Spoiler
Karigan heads out with Estral (daughter of Golden Guardian (bard-like being); Lost her voice, Lala of Second Empire fame has it; lover of Alton, the dude who's family built the wall against Blackveil) and Enver (half-Eletian, super obsessed with Karigan) to find the p'ehdrose and to scare up Estral's dad.

Grandmother, of Second Empire renown, is digging up stuff way up in the Lone Forest. She summons the Winter Wind, Aureas Slee, to attack the castle. Slee becomes obsessed with Estora (a lot of men are really, unsettleingly obsessed with women in this book) and kidnaps Zachary, sending him to his cave where he means Navi (an Eletian) and Magged (a crazed woman, living there since she was a child) and takes his place. After Laura Mapstone (Captain of the Riders) senses that Slee is not Zach, Slee returns to his cave, gravely wounded, and, after a battle with Mr. Whiskers (a gryphon/cat from the towers around Blackveil) and his mate, Midnight, Slee is chased off. Navi goes in a quest to destroy Slee and Zach is brought to the Second Empire camp. For a time, he is used as slave labor.

Estral tries to sneak into the Second Empire camp and she and Karigan are caught. Karigan is tortured, her back beaten badly. Enver sneaks in and helps them escape, but they then return to get Zachary and the Golden Guardian. Grandmother successfully digs up this Hellmouth thing and released a whole bunch of nastiness. Karigan becomes possessed by Westiron and chases the demons back to the Hellmouth. Grandmother is killed by Slee and Slee is, in turn, killed by Navi, who then takes on the aspect of Winter in his place. Sadly, Fiori, the Guardian, is killed.

Karigan insists on continuing on her mission with Enver to find the p'ehdrose, who are super sensitive. They finally get them to agree to join everyone in a fight against Mornhavon. As Karigan and Enver leave, Enver confesses his obsession with Karigan and sends her off before he attacks her. (F***ing ... control yourself Enver! It's not Karigan's problem if she rejects you).
