An interesting collection of journalistic think pieces highlighting all things strange about Indonesia. The title captures this super accurately I think?? I love it. Fundamentally, I might not agree with some myths and beliefs nor do I have the most complete repertoire of local folklore to have any say, but in general, I LIKE how people live differently. I dig people doing their own thing and making do with the reality as they know it. This book feeds into that sentiment well. It features unorthodox stuff such as alien, curses, kejawen, possession, ghosts, and animistic practices and simply nonconforming things including, illegal booze making, begal, swearing competition and vanishing people. This supplied my personal picture of Indonesia with a very much welcomed and delightful nuance. Indonesia can be anything but it could never be boring. Love that for us <3
