Betty by Tiffany McDaniel

Did not finish book. Stopped at 56%.
I DNF’d Betty at 56% despite liking the writing, the plot, the characters, and the narrator. The accents and language and setting (Appalachian Ohio) remind me of my own family. I want to finish the story but the characters encounter such graphic trauma that I can’t. I don’t blame the author, these traumas are real things people (especially women and girls) face, even more so in this area at that time. It’s essential we don’t shy away from suffering because what’s invisible can more easily continue. BUT the real world has been so prickly lately that I can’t dive into a fiction that details even more suffering. It’s important we care for ourselves and disengage from things that make us feel worse when we’re able. Just remember to listen to yourself closely enough to know when you’re at capacity. If you can do it with books, you can do it with life. Take care, Sweet Babies.
