The Road: a Graphic Novel Adaptation by Manu Larcenet

dark emotional tense fast-paced

5.0

Just like Cormac McCarthy’s novel, this story hits me hard. As a father and the primary caretaker of a young son, nothing tears through my heartstrings like the story of a man doing whatever he can to keep his child alive and free from the evils in the world.

What’s so great about this graphic novel version is the attention to detail in both environmental and atmosphere. Seeing the malnourished figures so clearly. The black contrasting the white in a world so grey it might be hard to know who is a good or bad guy.

Like The Road novel, there’s so much said in not saying anything, and the full spread panels of silent images with no dialogue tell as rich a story as one written in McCarthy’s words. What a great yet harrowing work.
