Becoming Mrs. Lewis by Patti Callahan
3.0

3.49 I entered this work of fiction knowing less than nothing about the real-life relationship between the narrator of the story, Joy Davidman and C. S. Lewis. Personally, coming from a religious background filled with ancient ritual, where there really isn't any room for questioning and debate, I was equally unfamiliar with the tradition of pervasive religious dialogue, about what it means to believe in God or to be a Christian, that is central to this book. So....I learned a lot in those 432 pages! My heart ached for Davidman's bumpy and much-too-short life's journey in the parochial misogynistic world of the 1940's and 1950's--the woman had gumption, by crikey! Each chapter was introduced with a short snippet taken from one of Davidman's poems--that was my absolute favourite part, making me want to delve deeper into her poetry, for its own sake.
