I really liked this story and the way you're kind of thrown in the middle. Eva is a hard-working writer, working hard to be taken seriously, and when Shane shows up at the author panel and kind of takes over, because he's famous for never doing publicity events, you really identify with Eva's resentment, especially because she's "just" a romance writer. Then you get glimpses of what happened between Eva and Shane when they were teens.

The past events hinge on
the way Eva's mother neglects her, and the mother's boyfriends who harrass Eva. Shane is in foster care and turns to drugs and alcohol for relief. In the present storyline, Eva is an anxious mother, reluctant to introduce her daughter to Shane because of the lingering trauma with her mother's boyfriends. Shane pours himself into helping at-risk youths. Both have to come to terms with their trauma before they can try to build a successful relationship, and I liked the care the book took with these characters and their emotional recovery.
