If This Gets Out
by Sophie Gonzales, Cale Dietrich
This book is amazing. It is YA. And I am a self proclaimed "Can not read YA" reader. BUT this book proved me wrong.
I could not get enough of this book! You could ask my friend @bookedwithannie I could not stop smiling and gushing about this book the whole time I was reading it. I absolutely loved every single one of these guys!
Ruben, Zach, Angel and Jon are all members of the American boy-band, Saturday. We start the story when they have been together as a band for about 2 years and all 4 guys are close friends. These guys are currently riding high on the wings of their world-wide popularity, but their lives are not as carefree as they appear.
The boys are so fiercely controlled by their management company, fitting them into these cookie cutter personas. They have to dress and act a certain way on stage and anytime they might be spotted in public.
I often wondered while reading the story if the management company was able to get away with controlling them so much because the guys were young and didn't know any different.
All of the guys are quietly struggling with being controlled. But our story focuses on Ruben, who is gay. He has been asking management to let him come out, but he is continually told that it isn't the right time. Ruben feels stifled, like he is unable to be his true self and it is beginning to weigh heavily on him.
-Although, sidenote, Angel (Reece) has my heart. I wanted to defend him to the ends of the earth!-
On a European tour, Ruben and Zach begin to grow closer. As their friendship evolves into romance and that opens up a whole new tension and dynamic for the guys to come to terms with.
I absolutely loved this book, my heart went out to all these boys. And I loved what these authors did by showing the toxic behind the scenes of what some of these young super famous music groups might go through. They are people too and not commodities to be sold and traded.
Something Angel said stuck with me because it seemed to me what the story circled the whole time:
"can’t you see?” he cries, still pacing. “They want to take everything away. They don’t want us to exist anymore. They’re murdering us. They’re going to kill us, until they only have our bodies left. That’s all they want from us."
The management company seemed to want to strip the guys of every identifying characteristic they had and make them generic molds that they could just keep profiting off of. And to see how they overcame that and got out of a toxic situation kept me hooked till the end of the book. Actually I wish we had more. This is a book I didn't want to end. I want them to be real and follow their career for years to come and make sure they all end up happy, thriving and successful!
