Memphis by Tara M. Stringfellow

3.0

Told through the lens of three generations of women, Memphis relays the history of the North women and the city they call home. It spans decades filled with joy, sorrow, and the women’s unwavering support for one another.

Memphis explores themes family history, community, self discovery, and Black womanhood.

This story started off really strong for me, but at some point it just kind of ground to a halt near the middle. I was about 70% through when I realized I was forcing myself to finish. And I did ultimately like the ending, but certainly was not swept away by the book overall.

Reading that the author had written this story while exploring her own family history helped me appreciate this story more. I could really see how this was her love letter to her community in Memphis and her family.

But part of me wished this was written more as a nonfiction/essay-style book, because she can write beautifully and I would love to explore her insight on the topics in the book more.
