Flawless by Carrie Lofty
4.0

Carrie Lofty never fails to disappoint in making big choices and tackling people and places previously unseen in romance novels. FLAWLESS takes place mostly in late1 800s South Africa amidst a diamond mind, the brokerage houses and the society that had sprung up around the industry. Lofty does a good job of showing the history, political and racial tensions of the time, as well as foreshadowing the issues to come in modern times, without it feeling heavy handed or taking away from the larger story: the reunion of Vivienne Christie with her husband Miles, Viscount Bancroft.

Viv and Miles have quite the history and a WHOLE LOT (like a metric ton each) of emotional baggage to overcome. Their biggest stumbling block: trust. So much trust has been violated in the past by the careless actions of the other, only trying to protect themselves. These are my favorite kind of plots: the internal, angsty, "can I learn to trust myself enough to trust someone else" storyline. When done well, as it is here, it's visceral and emotional.

Viv's backstory and her journey to healing takes a bit more suspension of disbelief, but I ADORED Miles transformation and appreciated how refreshingly honest his voice was. Lofty is so damn gifted at writing wonderful, thoughtful characters.

I am so happy that this is the start of a new series! Write faster Ms Lofty!!
