The Shadow of the Wind
by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
This book was beautifully written, the type of novel that’s easy to daydream about because Zafon paints such a clear picture of his characters, the time periods and the city of Barcelona. The plot is interesting, with enough twists to keep you turning the page, although I’ll admit the ending is not as shocking as some reviews would leave you to believe. I knew within the first few chapters precisely how this book would end and the identity of the mystery man Laine Coubert, even if I didn’t know how Zafon would lead us to it. The author almost lost me about half way through the book because although his narration is colorful and exciting, it can be extremely long winded. Some chapters seemed to go on forever and I almost DNF’d this book 3 times. Could have done without the incest plot line, which served genuinely no purpose than perhaps to be shocking. But overall I’m glad I persisted because it picks back up the last quarter of the book and wrapped up really nicely.
