Fat Chance, Charlie Vega by Crystal Maldonado

5.0

I have so much love. So many emotions. For this book. This is one of my favorite books of all time now and it will forever have a place in my heart.

Charlie’s story was so heartwarming and it was so beautiful to see her grow throughout the course of the novel. Growing up myself, I always struggled with my self-esteem and confidence, especially during high school. Seeing Charlie go through this herself and to see a similar mindset to my own when I was really struggling, made me feel so emotional. I hardly ever talked about how I felt in regard to my insecurities, so seeing someone else feel that way made me feel so seen and validated. I totally related to her and within the first 1/3 of the novel I had cried, laughed nonstop, and I could not stop smiling while reading it. I felt so many different emotions.

Also the representation inside of this novel was so amazing to see! Seeing not only a fat girl as the main character but a brown girl as the main character was phenomenal, and it will have such a huge impact on all girls that look like Charlie and can finally see themselves on a cover.

I truly loved every page of this novel and I never wanted to put it down. I did participate in a book club reading of this book hosted by the wonderful @fablebands community, so I did not read it all in one go, as I wanted to stay spoiler free so I could answer the discussion questions without knowing what would happen further in the book. However, if I had read this on my own, I know I would’ve finished it in one day because I was sO hooked to the story and the characters.

I absolutely loved Charlie and Amelia’s friendship. I loved Charlie and Brian’s relationship. I loved seeing Charlie’s relationship with herself grow and shift to a positive relationship that she was able to nurture as she continued to learn about herself. I also was happy to see Charlie and her mom’s relationship be able to overcome their obstacles and head into the right direction by the end of the novel.

There was so much I loved about this novel and I cannot wait to read it again. I will recommend this novel to everyone as I truly believe it is a story that everyone needs to read. I rate this novel 5/5 stars!
