As much as I’d like to rate it higher, the writing style just isn’t for me. It is a little too plain, unadorned, and in parts - I don’t use it pejoratively- unsophisticated. It may be a more common style in YA fiction, which I don’t typically read. The story itself is suitably mythic and, though sometimes I groaned at elements and was unconvinced of the scale and some of the conceits, I salute the choice to work with the epics - though unfortunately it just isn’t for me.
