Let me preface this review by saying that I read the first book of this series but did not read books two and three. While reading the fourth book, I never felt like I had missed any previous storylines.
I loved the first book, so I was so excited to dive into book four. Thementioned’s writing style was easy, and the storyline was addicting—it kept me guessing and actually helped to bring me out of my reading slump. I also found the concept of good sociopaths to be an interesting addition to the genre, and it brought out the psychology nerd in me.
However, two things just can’t be overlooked, and ultimately, I reduced the book from a 4.5 star to a 3.5.
1. The ending had too much going on. While surprising, I had guessed one of the twists reasonably early on. It was fun to see how it played out, though. But, there was another twist and then another and one more. It just felt like too much and left me very underwhelmed and confused.
2. Nick. What an awful human being. I don’t understand why the author would bring him and Annalisa back together, but it really brought the story down. She took a strong FMC and made her seem weak and dependent on the man who had mistreated her time and time again. Several things occurred between the two characters that brought the ick factor to the story, and it was disappointing to read.
