Not entirely sure how to feel about this one. I chose this as a BOTM add-on, largely because I have noticed many of my students reading this book and others by Colleen Hoover. Knowing that this book is making the rounds in my middle school makes me a little 😬 now. This book tackles an undoubtedly important and tricky topic, and, for the most part, I think it does a fairly good job of doing so, especially after reading the author’s note at the end. I understand why my students are picking this up - the writing is accessible (the tone and style seemed rather YA) and this author is BookTok famous. I definitely think there is value in pre-teens reading stories like this at a formative age, but the sex/graphic parts may be a bit much for 11/12/13 year-olds. Though, they’re probably seeing/hearing worse from other places. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Overall, this was a heavy book to digest with a surprisingly simple/juvenile writing style. The dialogue, in particular, struck me as way too simplistic/cheesy.
