This was a very wholesome book in my opinion.
I really enjoyed reading about Rudeus trying to teach Eris. The slow but interesting build-up of their relationship. This was made even better by the inclusion of a summary about Eris at the end of each chapter, where it can be seen that she slowly improves and starts to take a liking to Rudeus.

Nothing drastic happens in the volume, but it's mainly focused on character and world-building. The world-building was also done amazingly. We learn about the history and legends of this world due to Rudeus' curiosity, which in turn makes me as a reader curious about the world. What makes this even better is that we learn about the world via a book Rudeus reads, this makes me skeptical about everything that we learn. How can we know for sure that a book written by humans doesn't tell the whole story about the human-demon conflict?

Chapter 8 is especially awesome, because we get to see the perspective of a lot of different characters that we learned about in the book. They all have a different view and theory about the weird phenomena happening in the Fitoa Region.

Many people might find Rudeus' behavior unsettling and disturbing. It is! How else is he supposed to feel? He is a 40-something-year-old shut-in in the body of a 10-year-old. This would mess with anyone's mind and feelings. The way Magonote depicts Rudeus is exactly how someone like that would act. It is dirty and twisted, BUT Rudeus slowly starts to understand this as well. He slowly starts to learn that other people also have feelings and insecurities. The story is also about that, about Rudues learning to give his feelings a place and act in a respectful manner, but this takes time, effort, and failure.
