Spill the Sweet Tea
by Lyra Parish
Another entertaining, steamy, small town romance from Lyra Parish! This time we have a fun second chance trope with a dash of forced proximity. Kinsley really wants her “Ask Kinsley” column and her boss gives her the assignment to cover the one hundred year anniversary of the local bookstore being in business. The business happens to be owned by Hayden’s family, meaning Kins will have to step foot in the place she’s avoided for ten years because of all the memories. Meanwhile, Hayden comes back in town under mysterious circumstances. He, also, won’t let Kins interview any of his family members for the article; she’ll have to talk to him. This causes all the forced proximity fun!
Kinsley is such a fun character! She has a lot of woo woo and does her best to manifest what she wants. She isn’t excited to have to work with Hayden, but she’s willing to give it a shot. Hayden has a lot to worry about and not all of that worry is in Houston. He’s back for an unknown period of time and is running the bookstore while his parents are away. He and Kinsley were wonderful together! I liked how open their communication was and how much they’d matured since they were teens. Their honestly and banter (plus steamy scenes) were refreshing and made the story great!
I quite liked the small town gossip! It was absolutely fun because Kinsley is used to spilling the sweet tea, rather than being the subject matter! One thing I did quite like, was how Kinsley’s woo woo was included. It didn’t seem forced or awkwardly added, she was well written to enjoy tarot cards and crystals charged by the moon without it interrupting the flow of the story. She was able to be herself without it seeming awkward or disjointed.
There are some small flashbacks to when Kinsley and Hayden were younger and it was a little awkward to understand that they were flashbacks while listening to the audiobook, but overall it didn’t interrupt the storytelling too much.
The story has swearing, plenty of steam, and a lot of heart! It can be enjoyed all by itself, but I recommend reading/listening to Summer and Beckett’s first for maximum enjoyment!
I loved the narrators!! They are the same ones who did the first book and they do a wonderful job with this story as well! Each gives life to the characters the author created, giving them all the personality and quirks (all the woo woo!) that Kinsley and Hayden deserve! The story is told in first person dual POV, with the female narrator voicing Kinsley’s chapters and the male narrator voicing Hayden’s. I listened at 1.15x speed.
