Look Homeward, Angel by Thomas Wolfe
2.0

It was an endeavor for me to finish reading, but I stuck with it, hoping for something more than a disjointed tale of a dysfunctional family. Alas, that’s all it was. This is out of my genre, but I had hoped that it would at least compete with some of the other classics I’ve read. Sadly it did not.

Oliver or W.O.Gant struggles to find himself. Suffering from the loss of his wife, Cynthia, he wanders, deciding to become a stonecutter after seeing the statue of an angel. He meets and eventually marries Eliza Pentland. His struggles with alcoholism, and Eliza’s fixation of money and real estate are sources of disunity between the couple and yet they manage to give birth to a seven children. The youngest of these is Eugene, whose journey into adulthood occupies the remainder of the text.
