Sundial by Catriona Ward

challenging dark emotional mysterious sad tense medium-paced

5.0

I've had this book on my shelf for a while, and honestly, I'm just pissed at myself that I didn't read it sooner.

The story is very strange right from the start. You find yourself trying to make sense of what's going on, coming up with theories, and when you have to put the book down because you're an adult and have responsibilities you keep telling yourself "just one more page." It's dark, it's twisted, and a must-read, in my opinion.

Catrionas Last House On Needless Street is one of my all-time favourites, and Sundial comes in a close second.

(Warning to everyone that needs content warnings for things with animals - this does have animal death and animal experiments. Even though it's not super extreme in violence, it is mentioned throughout the book often. As someone who gets really fucked up with animal stuff I found that Catrionas writing did it respectfully.)

READ THIS IF YOU ENJOY: domestic psychological thrillers, dysfunctional families, dual timelines, multiple POVs, intricate plots, really bizzare vibes.
