I'm not a fan of most space opera. Star Wars has never been my "deal". But I had a great time with this. The ideas here are fantastic. The book has a tight plot and mind-bending concepts. It's a page turner. Fans of this subgenre will likely enjoy it a good deal more than me.
The writing got in the way of my enjoyment at times. Characters are always uttering "sigh". I did a quick search on the e-book version and found that character's sigh 111 times in A Fire Upon the deep. That's about once every three pages that someone sighs. I admit it grated on me.
