The Running Man by Richard Bachman
2.25
Obviously difficult to judge this having seen the Arnie film... The idea of contestants in a game remains, but very little else is the same.
The idea of Richards being on the run throughout the public places of America doesn't really make sense - how could someone survive without being spotted by a reward claiming public, especially when, as the blurb says, the game is rigged?
Reading the book in the year in which it's set was interesting (the broadcast media exploiting ordinary people for ratings?) but the idea of a 'resistance' to the media control wasn't really explored, so you just end up with a kinda boring run of a character heading for an (after a certain point) obvious conclusion.
