A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
3.5
the sheer volume (ha) is daunting but once you get into it it's very cool. lots of different plotlines, but pretty easy to keep straight. good job killing ned , glad there was that conflict. bad job killing jory. idk i really liked jory for some reason . some of the characters are hard to understand (sansa) and also the age thing? i absolutely despise the "tomorrow is my 10th birthday when i become a MAN. i have been trained in swordfighting since the womb and can best any trained 30 year old in hand to hand combat. i think it's time to get a wife" fantasy trope and this one's eggregious. "i'm a man" no ur a literal child. u should be in grade school or something. i get that this is supposed to be medieval-ish and stuff where people expect to die by 40 and therefore child labor or whatever, but the kid is goddamn 6 years old. some of the dothraki worldbuilding stuff feels pretty orientalist. idk the whole "savages from the east" thing - a little on the nose? i like the fantasy elements of the book and would want to see more. holy hell the map is hard to take in, its so fucking BIG. also daenarys being like 12 and essentially marrying/fucking a 30ish man? and being pretty much chill with it ? yeahhhhh no. i get that it is part of the worldbuilding, but it's still veeery not fun to read
