Runaway Road
by Devney Perry
2.5 stars rounded up for quality writing and flow. This is a very low angst read, with some unfortunate cliches/tropes that dragged it down for me. I’m not sure why I feel unsettled by this book. I need to think about it more. Some spoilers ahead.
It had a promising start, with a road trip and personal journey that was sadly cut short because she fell in love with a guy she barely knows. I think the author mostly pulled this off while I was reading. Then when I stepped outside the haze of the pretty immersive experience, it got weird.
The alpha tendencies weee annoying, the crazy and jealous ex-wife was boring and predictable, the unplanned pregnancy features not once, not twice, but THREE separate times. This could easily have been written in the 90s, except for the cell phone that conveniently was left behind, broken, or ignored.
I’ll probably read the next one, because it’s available.
