Scout Is Not a Band Kid
by Jade Armstrong
Absolutely fantastic middle grade graphic novel with extremely lovable and relatable characters. It's really great seeing characters that were into the same type of things and fandoms that I was also super into when I was in middle school. I also got really into anime when I was that age, and it can be really hard to find friends who accept you for things that might be considered "nerdy". Scout struggles with being honest about what she loves with her different friend groups. It's hard to be true to yourself with other people as a teen!! This book had a lot about learning about what it means to be a good friend and the importance of supporting each other and growing as people!!!
Scout is such a great main character, and I had so much fun reading this book and learning about band & music info at the same time!
It was cool seeing something very specifically set in Canada, and pretty funny to see the "Canadian translations/explanations" for some things that I didn't even realize were specifically Canadian. (Practise vs Practice!)
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves stories about friendship, music, and fandom.
I'll definitely be adding a few copies to my school & classroom libraries for my students to enjoy.
