A Promise of Fire
by Amanda Bouchet
I should have enjoyed this book way more than I did. Magic, gods, politics, battles are all things I love. The basic premise of a woman who can tell lies coerced into aiding an upstart king sounds great. The problem for me was that this story, and many other romances, fails to have any character other than our heroine acknowledge that kidnapping and coercion is wrong. It is NEVER adequately resolved that Beta Sinta kidnapped her and that refusing to allow a person a choice in their future is deeply fucked up. Add to that the sexual politics of getting involved with a man who literally has you shackled to him and then exchanges the magical shackle rope thing for an unbreakable vow that inflicts excruciating pain should it be broken (and that man already witnessed this), and I'm just... Plus none of the other men on Team Beta even seem cognizant that Cat isn't there of her own free will.
Deeply frustrating read.
