Kingdom by W.S. Greer

5.0

Late to the party, as usual! I read Greer’s IWAS (loved it) first and expected much the same muchness from Kingdom as I got there. And that rang true for maybe the first 70%ish. This goes darker than IWAS, the CNC scene most notably, I was here for it, speak that truth! However that last 20% had me conflicted. Still does.

Without giving away spoilers because I won’t be that person and this should be a blind read: there’s a fundamental foundation for “the lifestyle” that is so deeply rooted in trust there’s nothing that’s not tainted with it. The third act plot twist defies that trust, spits in the face of it, yet there’s forgiveness given in such a loose, almost easy way. Alina monologues earlier in the book that “when you have love, you should also have forgiveness” but the level of deception he perpetuates past and present, just doesn’t sit well with me. I guess it’s jarring really, Greer makes you fall in love with the MMC, he really depicts something that could represent the ideal in a S male. Then he goes and does some seriously shonky shit. Is there a HEA? Yes. Do I think he deserved one? Undecided. What I can say for certain is that this had me gripped, it made me FEEL, it had me screaming and viscerally furious and earns that 5th star for its efforts. It’s becoming apparent that this deeper rooted writing forcing the reader to think seems to be Greer’s style. I had a similar experience with IWAS (just not as intense) This book makes you critically think, while it also represents and identifies. Absolute must-read for the brave hearted.
