“You know how you’re not supposed to work on your bed? ‘Cause it messes with your sleep? Okay. I do think there’s something to that. And generally— it’s a really good idea… to not go to sleep where you work. Or work where you sleep.”

Millie heard that before. She did it anyway, all the time. … She did and often would, far in the future, wear her RA polo to bed. It’s how she slept best.

I’m officially obsessed. This book so cleverly discusses tensions between race, class, status, money etc. Kiley Reid perfectly nailed the voice of college students (speaking from a not-so distant college graduate from a southern university). The interconnectedness and the messy moral ambiguity felt natural and gave the characters so much dimension.

The ending is polarizing, but for me personally, I felt it was perfect for this story; that’s just college, that’s just life. The semester ends and you have to keep going.

Millie and Kennedy were always my favorite perspectives to read from. I went to school with people like them. Part of me deeply relates to them. It truly holds up a mirror to what it was like to be a college student during the late 2010s, without being demeaning to the college students of the late 2010s.
