Darkness, Kindled by Samantha Young

3.0

I liked how the various story lines ended and how things ended for each character. I was really happy with how things finished for everyone. My main complaint with this book is that while the first half concluded the main story arc that tied together the first three novels to this last installment, the second half of this book felt like an appendix. Just a bunch of random story lines (some that didn't even need to be revisited) thrown together. They were quickly reintroduced, quickly wrapped up. While by that point I was already quite interested in the main characters, so I appreciated more story time, it was poorly done, and didn't add much to the series as a whole.

And, good merciful Jesus, was this series poorly written. Improperly used 'whos' and 'whoms' left and right, sentences that needed to be reread multiple times to be clarified, a combination of made-up and overused words, commas thrown about haphazardly -- it was completely distracting. Downright amateur writing and irresponsible editing. I've read more recent work from this author that I don't remember being this badly written, so I hope maybe this was an example of inexperience, or maybe I had a questionable copy of this series. I can usually turn a blind eye to these sorts of things, but once it starts to distract me from my reading, I have to point it out.

In short, an entertaining and creative YA series with interesting and compelling characters. I would recommend it, though not as a must-read.
