Clock Dance by Anne Tyler
5.0

I love, love Anne Tyler’s books. Everyday life is told so vividly. Characters are so lovable and even though there are many in this novel, it is easy to follow all of them. I have to say I really disliked her sons and husband but that is the point of the story, I think.

Willa is the type of woman who has always been happy being in the background, doing for others, pleasing others. Given this disposition, it is easy to understand why she marries who she does, but what makes less sense is why her sons are such assholes. She ends up in Baltimore for several weeks, to take care of a stranger and only sees her son once - at dinner - a couple of hours. Don't get it!

The compilation of Denise's neighbors who are helpful, friendly and yet somewhat aloof is interesting. They all seem to just "drop by" at Denise's, yet they are somewhat helpful, but yet, not so helpful. But honestly, this is the way it is in most friendly neighborhoods. You look after one another, but can't take full responsibility for others. This is what Tyler does so well - portraying everyday life so well. Her stories are enjoyable. I look forward to getting lost in the life she is creating in her books. I can SEE the life she is creating and at times, wish it for my own!
