An Ember in the Ashes
by Sabaa Tahir
I feel so out of place in the middle of 4-5 stars reviews. This was a 2.5/5 at best for me.
There wasn't really anything special. The first few chapters caught my attention but it got boring because the characters just don't have enough in them, if that makes sense. I could not understand the different divisions of people until closer to the middle. Like the Scholars, Martials, etc. Why were they called such? What did each do before the empire took over? I only caught the explanation for the Scholars.
Laia is strongly driven by saving his brother. She does some stupid things that could have endangered Izzy. I did not see depth in her character.
As much as I liked Elias' chapters, it got boring at some point when all you read is about his hatred for the empire, guilt, trying to desert, and his ifs and whys.
Helene was the next best thing after Elias.
The romance felt forced. Keenan liking Laia when there's no connection besides the former's admiration for her father and as her handler. Laia and Elias were okay, predictable but still didn't feel the connection. Elias and Helene should at least been given the chance. He strongly denied loving her more than just his best friend but all his inner thoughts when he sees her says otherwise.
I wish we knew more of what Laia's parents did with The Resistance besides being their leader. What's their biggest accomplishment? How did they build The Resistance? What were their visions besides overthrowing their oppressors? How did The Resistance build their ranks after their initial leaders died? Why were their broken factions within it? I have so many questions. Maybe they'll be answered in the next books. We'll see how that goes.
I liked the challenges that were set to find the next emperor but that's just about it. Generic YA theme. The Resistance played sort of a big role in this but we never got enough of this.
I like it enough to continue on but it was meh. The writing bore me a bit. sorry. :(
Probably, would be selling my FL set after I finish it.
