Pashmina by Nidhi Chanani

5.0

I thoroughly enjoyed this inventive and beautifully illustrated graphic novel, especially how the artist played with color, shifting between black and white and color frames depending whether the magical pashmina was present or not. The main character, Priyanshi “Pri,” is an ordinary teenage girl struggling to fit in at school, to balance her American and Indian identity, and to assuage her fears of losing her aunt and uncle when they have their first child. I enjoyed Chanani’s gimmick of the magical pashmina that can transport Priyanshi to India to learn more about her roots among other things. Overall, this was a fabulous debut graphic novel.
