Blood, Sweat, and Pixels
by Jason Schreier
This is certainly a somewhat niche topic for a book but for any gamer with decent taste this oral history of the development of some of the most striking entries into the video game pantheon is wholly fascinating. Schrier does excellent work as an editor and narrator and the background insight he offers is fascinating. From the developer thought process which explains why CDProjektRed remain miles ahead of other RPG developers in terms of writing. To the tumultuous history of Destiny and why it still feels like such a mess 10 years later. To the heartwarming achievement of things like Shovel Knight and Stardew Valley forged from force of will and passion alone. To even the tragedy of Star Wars 1313 and the very real fear developers must face in their commitment to creation. An equally fascinating read for gamers, or simply people who enjoyed Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow.
