The Night Raven by Sarah Painter
3.0

It's a meh read. Nothing particularly good, but not awful either.

Some things I thought were fine:
Lydia is readable I guess. She is an immature slacker for a 27 year old and has no spine or boundaries, but I've read worse FMCs.

The magical mafia family world - it needs some fleshing out but it’s a good start.

Some things I didn't like:
How she treated Jason most of the book. Like, why are you always so rude? He saved your life and you are just pissy for no actual reason. This could have been an interesting story element, but their interactions were just so middle school.

Fleet- he has all the personality of a brick wall. In fact, being a brick wall is his personality- we get it, he's a big guy who looks good -it's repeated often enough. And their insta-whatever made him even less compelling. This is one of the biggest irritations of insta-love relationships - we don’t get to know any of the characters well enough to buy into any type of relationship.

The main character as a PI - I hate how often this trope is used because it is almost never well executed. The characters are usually very bad at it and do some things that I, as a reader without a single day of investigator training, can see are pointless or really stupid. At least Lydia acknowledges she is a novice but it is still super annoying when she could have had literally any other job history and she would have still been as effective. It’s even more annoying when she totally forgets she has very little experience but offers her skills to some very important, and potentially dangerous, people with ridiculous amounts of unearned confidence.

The side characters in general - they are too one note.

I don’t care enough to continue the series - especially since it seems like a love triangle is on the horizon and I don’t mess with those.
