The Lewis Man by Peter May

4.0

This really a novel about people and place, in this case the Outer Hebrides islands in Scotland, rather than a murder mystery, although there is a murder. Although many of the elements of the crime are fairly obvious before the end, May lets the elements unfold in a way that elegantly tells the story of life in the harsh geography of the islands from the 1950s through the present day. The characters are compelling and the setting haunting. One of the most interesting techniques in the book is the use of the narrative voice of an elderly man suffering from Alzheimers to tell the past story in a present voice. It raises interesting questions about how our past shapes us and stays with us and how we understand ourselves through our beliefs about our family and those around us. Looking forward to number three in the trilogy.
