This was SO GOOD! It honestly felt like being back in school, age 12-13, she got the voice, the friendships and conflicts, exactly right for the age group. I too had two best friends in school at that age (one black, one white), so the dynamic of the three best friends here was very familiar. I loved how well the author handled the struggles addressed in the book - BLM, boys (including consent) etc - perfectly pitched for the target reader, I felt. Shayla the main character is a sympathetic character who makes mistakes along the way and learns loads throughout the book, and her friends and the other kids in her class were all interesting, well rounded characters too. It just about managed not to be too preachy, though there were moments it trod a fine line. I highly recommend it.
