Intense and gut-wrenching and powerful. I have so, so much respect for Shari Franke and all she’s been through — as an oldest daughter myself, I can’t fathom how excruciating it would be to know that my siblings were in danger but that I couldn’t reach them. Shari fought so hard for those kids, and I hope she knows that she’s everything her own mother isn’t.
I have to agree, just a little, with some of the comments about how this memoir probably could’ve benefited from a few more years of healing and hindsight on Shari’s end. i.e., at one point Shari says she’s forgiven her father, and while I sincerely hope that’s the case, I can’t help but wonder if her feelings about him will truly be that simple in years to come, given everything he did and didn’t do. Not that it’s really any business of mine — Shari more than has the right to tell her story when and how she chooses to, and I wish her nothing but the best going forward.
