“I need you. I can’t stand the thought of being without you. You’re the last person I think about before I go to sleep, and the first person I think about when I open my eyes in the morning. You’re it for me, baby.” - John Logan
The second book in Elle Kennedy's Off-Campus Series, The Mistake, explores love, sacrifice, ambition, and university life.
The novel centres on Grace Ivers, a vibrant, sassy freshman who strives to navigate and discover college life, and John Logan, a hot, charming and popular college jock who is crushing on his best friend's girl.
"I love you, you stupid jackass.” - Grace Ivers
I considered trying some of Elle Kennedy's work, and her most recent novel seemed a wise choice because of its rave reviews—until I was craving a book involving grovelling and ended up picking up this one instead.
CHARACTERS
Most of us can identify with Grace's character as we begin our first year of university. We become inquisitive when we want to fit in, which can also lead to a possibility of heartbreak and ridicule. What can we do to go past that? Get over it and become a new version of yourself.
On the other hand, Logan's demeanour exudes charm and confidence. His carefree persona is so deceiving when we uncover the real Logan behind the façade he puts on at school. He finds himself divided between chasing his dream of becoming a professional hockey player and fulfilling his obligation to his inebriated father.
These two characters have started on the wrong foot with their relationship but they've shown some character evolution throughout the book as they support each other in overcoming the school struggles and personal issues.
CHEMISTRY
It was entertaining to witness Logan and Grace in tandem, especially when she made a list for him to grovel. Ridiculous? Nah. Logan went to great lengths to win his girl back, and I believe he deserved it. Although they had chemistry, I found it to be decent. All in all, I sensed some connection between these two and that's all that matters to me.
PLOT
The plot has a solid beginning and strikes the ideal balance of humour, drama, and clever banter. Nevertheless, I felt that it was an anticlimactic moment when Logan finally succeeded in leaving his father's burden. I assumed he would have been the one to place his father in such positions. Applauding him for having such an excellent ending to his tale arc. I was dismayed, sadly.
To sum up, The Mistake is a lighthearted, thought-provoking sports romance that highlights friendship and brotherhood, self-discovery, and the challenges that families endure.
