The Notorious Dr. MacT: A Hot Scots Prequel by Anna Durand

5.0

'If it's possible to be swooned by a fictional man in a kilt, Dr. MacTaggart made it happen. A fantastic prequel read!

First of all, I'd like to thank the author, Anna Durand, for her kindness towards me and my love of her and her books. I'm signed up on her ARC team but the emails for the ebook ARC reads of this and 'The British Bastard' didn't make it to my inbox (my email messed up). We spoke via Instagram and she kindly sent me the link to both ebook ARCs. I offered to jump back in with her next release, but she offered these ARCs & I accepted. Not many authors would do that, but I'm glad Anna did as she's fast become a firm favourite author to read and I'm thrilled to get the chance to support her--even with a close deadline till release day.

That said, on with the review!

As outlined in the bottom of the blurb for The Notorious Dr. MacT, this is a prequel novel that reveals the full backstory of Iain and Rae, going beyond what's revealed in Notorious in a Kilt (Hot Scots, Book Five). Usually I would suggest going back to the beginning to read a series from the beginning if books are standalones, but since this is a prequel read, no harm will be done by reading this--or The British Bastard--before the main novel. Especially, if like me, you haven't yet read the novels the prequels come before. I jumped into the Hot Scots series with Book Nine, Devastating in a Kilt, and have followed Anna & her releases since.

Jumping in with this prequel has filled me in on the backstory of what happens between Iain MacTaggart and Rae Eveheart. If you've already read their main novel, you'll already know their journey prior to their beginning from here and will want to know the backstory. Either way if you're here first or were there first, you're in for some Anna Durand goodness!

Away from home teaching at an American university (college), Iain MacTaggart falls victim to fate when his path crossed with Rae Eveheart, a student at the university. Here we spy our first two tropes, forbidden romance and age gap romance. The two of them were meant to be, but their circumstance isn't ideal to make what they want to be, to happen without consequences. It's only a matter of time before something comes along to shake their world up, and this prequel is the journey to that moment. Continuing then on to the Happily Ever After in their full-length novel.

For a prequel novel--which I'm not usually a reader of--I was greatly impressed with how much was packed into their backstory! Yes it was sped up in place in terms of covering big skips in time, but nothing than what we're used to seeing in perhaps an epilogue. Nonetheless, it wasn't a deterrent and I happily devoured this prequel as I've done with every Anna novel I've been lucky to read.

The Notorious Dr. MacT has convinced me to add the full-length novel to my TBR, and I'm looking forward to the day I can pick the story up.

Five stars!
