Totally loved this book, read it in 2 sittings.  The author brings the period alive with her meticulous research and (seemingly at least) accurate dialogue.  The characters never seem caricaturish or twee, and whilst their flaws are front and centre they are real and lovable people that you want to get to know.  I love 20th century historical fiction and this particular event (San Francisco earthquake) was one I knew very little about.  I will seek out more work by this author for sure
