3.5* A gentle, fun and surprisingly emotional read, At First Spite is my first book by Olivia Dade but definitely won’t be my last.

I found my feeling towards this book consistently changing during my time with it. but I ultimately came away having really enjoyed it. I absolutely adored the gentleness of Dade’s approach to Athena’s depression and the way Matthew took care of her was truly beautifully.

Athena admittedly somewhat irritated me at times (particularly with her constant meme references) but I equally found myself deeply relating to her in moments. Similarly, Matthew was the biggest sweetheart and I adored him but his inability to stand up to his brother was somewhat exhausting. That said, their flaws made these characters messy and real in a way that ultimately had me rooting for them.

I definitely could have done without the third act break-up however, the grovelling and gesture that followed was pure genius.

Overall, this was a really fun read with a wonderful and heartwarming approach to mental health and I’m certain I’ll be picking up the next book in the series.

what to expect:

• slow burn
• he’s her ex fiancée’s brother
• plus sized fmc
• depression rep (fmc)
• therapy positive
• forced proximity (she moves next door)
• dislike to lovers
• the cutest silkie chicken
• small town
