Yona of the Dawn, Vol. 35

Yona attends the South Kai conference, leading to a disastrous accusation.
For the entire series we’ve been building up to a grand battle with Kai, and it finally feels like the Kai story arcs are truly starting. I feel like this is probably just the beginning though because there’s still the North to think about. We’ve seen through several story arcs the underhandedness of South Kai, so for them to falsely accuse Yona of murder of one of the members of their delegation comes as no big surprise. (Thankfully) Su-won was able to diffuse the situation to some extent, and while he's proven himself a capable ruler again and again I'm wondering if his illness is debilitating enough that he won't be able to perform his duties when it comes to the war. This leads me to I wonder if Kye-sook is going to eventually move past his apprehensions towards Yona and admit that he thinks she is a good stand-in for Su-wonthough I’m not sure this applies to the battle field (wherein I think they’d be foolish not to utilize the Thunder Beast).
As for Hak, sometimes I think Hak is really intelligent and other times I think he’s a total airheadthe duality is really something. While he verges on too perceptive, this doesn’t overly surprise me as he is a former general. There were definitely moments in this volume where I just wanted him to shut his mouth and not get into trouble, but being quiet and playing nice wasn't getting him anywhere so I can't really fault him. Now that he knows Su-won’s secret I am looking forward to seeing him further process his emotions towards Su-won. And now that majority of the HHB knows Su-won’s secret, I am hoping to get back to moments between the members, especially Hak and Yona. I feel like we've been depraved and at this point I'll take what I can get. On a side note, the whole "we need to kill anyone who finds out about Su-won's illness" thing is starting to get out of hand. He's ill enough that it now seems like anyone he comes across is at risk, and he doesn't seem to put much consideration into this.
To speak of the Princess, it is a relief to finally see Yona playing her cards, it makes the story feel like it's finally starting to move again. Though I'm sure the new character introduced will also further the plot. I can't say I like Meinyan, but then again I do tend to be slow to warm up to new characters when it comes to this series. She's the first antagonist who has shown blatant disrespect for Yona to her face and that really rubbed me the wrong way. I'm also tired of people thinking they can harness the power of the dragons, as if they aren't people with their own thoughts, feelings and motivations, though I know this comes from a place of ignorance. I've always respected Su-won for not placing so much value on the powers of the dragons, so his disinterest in Meinyan's plan was no surprise.
